Enugu Council Polls: ENSIEC unveils strategy for hitch-free elections

The Enugu State Independent National Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) said on Wednesday it would not display the result sheets of the local government area elections at polling centres on Saturday.
The chairman of the Commission, Bonny Eneh, said yesterday that people should not expect sensitive materials like result sheets to be displayed to them before voting could commence, adding that such materials are brought in midway into the election to avoid somebody snatching and destroying them.
He therefore warned that it was wrong for people to insist on seeing the result sheet before they could allow the election to commence.
Eneh said: “It is a fundamental issue, you do not display result sheets to non members or appointed ad hoc staff. Result sheets are shared by Supervising Presiding Officers (SPOs), so for anybody to demand it, it is against the rules of the game because the hazards still remain that people can snatch the result sheet and destroy it.”
He further disclosed that the commission yesterday took delivery of 38 iron boxes containing the sensitive electoral materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Enugu office.
“We have materials such as ballot papers, result sheets, and every other material that is used during election and is sensitive,” he said.
He declined to name where the electoral materials were printed, saying “It is not for public consumption.”
Eneh stated that ENSIEC had put necessary security measures in place to safeguard the materials till the Election Day.
He said all necessary arrangements had been made to conduct a successful poll.
The ENSIEC boss also noted that some opposition parties had dragged the commission to court on issues of disqualification of candidates, noting that the matter is coming up today.
The Commission also confirmed that the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the chairmanship position in the 17 councils in the state are running unopposed in the said election, as the candidates of other parties were all disqualified for different reasons ranging from non-payment of taxes to presentation of fake certificates  among others.
However, four other parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC) Labour Party, (LP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are said to have fielded councillorship candidates in few councils mainly within Enugu East senatorial zone.
