FERMA Begins Implementation Of Fuel Users Charge Soon

THE Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is finalising arrangements to ensure the implementation of the five per cent Fuel Users Charge as stipulated in the 2007 FERMA Amendment Act.
When implemented, 40 per cent of the fund would accrue to FERMA while the remaining 60 per cent would be for state road maintenance agencies.

Managing Director of FERMA, Mr. Gabriel Amuchi, who disclosed this to journalists at the closing session of a three-day workshop for Zonal Coordinators of the agency on Friday in Abuja, said that all the stakeholders involved, including the National Assembly, were looking at all the parameters to ensure smooth implementation.
Amuchi said the implementation of the fuel users charge was very imperative as it would enhance the operations of the agency.
He said: “We are worried about the non-implementation of the fuel users change; we are working on the issue as it would enhance the operations of the agency. All the parties involved like the National Assembly are concerned and are looking at all the parameters to ensure smooth implementation.”
Amuchi said the agency was strategising for road maintenance ahead of the dry season, adding that FERMA wants to respond to all the challenges that come with heavy rains in Nigeria.
According to him, all critical dual-carriage ways in the country such as the Abuja-Kadua-Kano road, Onitsha-Owerri road, Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt road, Ninth Mile-Obollo Afor- Otukpo road, among others, would be covered to ensure zero porthole.
“We need to intensify on our operations and increase the tempo of work to guarantee smooth movement during the Yuletide. We are dealing with 35,000 kilometres of federal roads. About two years ago, about 75 per cent of the federal roads were in deplorable condition. But today, about 80 per cent of the roads are in fair condition. FERMA has procured new equipment to facilitate road maintenance,” he added
