Fifteen state chairmen of the political parties that participated in the Anambra governorship elections held last Saturday gave their support, yesterday, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a supplementary election to determine the winner of the polls.
The 15 political parties that gave their support to INEC include PDM, MPPP, ADC, ACD; Action Alliance, AA; National Conscience Party, NCP; Accord Party; KOWA; Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN; Social Democratic Party, SDP; CPP, APA and DPP, among others.
A total number of 23 political parties participated in the elections which three governorship candidates, Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress, APC; Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Ifeanyi Ubah of Labour Party, have called for its cancellation.
The candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Willie Obiano, is still leading in the results so far announced by INEC.
From the results announced so far, the 15 political parties supporting the supplementary election did not score up to 10,000 votes put together from the over 1.7 million registered voters.
Addressing journalists in Awka, the state capital yesterday, the state chairmen of the 15 concerned political parties led by Prince Chuba Ikeagwu of the PDM, said their support for the supplementary election, which is a unanimous one, is in the best interest of the people of Anambra State.
Ikeagwu, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, who were present during the press briefing stated that it will not be in the interest of the state, which is bigger than any individual or group to cancel the entire election as being demanded by some people.
Shedding light on their position on the issue that has generated critical comments in the public domain, Ikeagwu contends: “Let the supplementary election be conducted and let the state move forward. The supplementary election is acceptable to us, let INEC go and conduct it and whoever wins, we will support him in the interest of the state.”
The chairmen, who thanked INEC and other stakeholders in the state for conducting a peaceful election without loss of life and destruction of properties in the state, urged those who are condemning the election over some lapses, to remember that all human activities are not devoid of errors or mistakes.
Ikeagwu summed up their position: “That after critical review, we accept and abide by all the results collated by INEC in the Anambra governorship election, and we back INEC in its proposed supplementary elections for the conclusion of the governorship election, to enable INEC declare the result without further delay so that the state can move forward,” Ikeagwu said.
