Emergency Rule Extension Designed To Cripple Adamawa – Nyako

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State yesterday blamed the extension of the emergency rule in the state by President Goodluck Jonathan as the handiwork of “Abuja politicians” from the state who are bent on “causing calamity and destruction in the state”.
Nyako made the remark when the members of Bishops and Eminent Clerics’ Forum of Nigeria, Niger Delta chapter, visited him at the Dougirei Government House, Yola.
The governor said the people of Adamawa were tired of moving alongside the “evil men” who are never tired of causing havoc in the state.
“We in Adamawa State have resolved not to ‘walk together’ with massive wrong-doers and cannot tolerate impunity and lawlessness by the national leadership of any political party located in Abuja because that will be tantamount to inviting chaos and anarchy in our beloved state,” he said.
Nyako added that despite the fact that international and national commentators have adjudged Adamawa as peaceful, “a few evil politicians” in Abuja have ensured that the emergency rule which they initiated six months ago continues in order to plunge the state into chaos, replicating the sordid killing fields and the graveyards of Borno and Yobe states.
He added that the ill motives of the purveyors of the emergency rule in the state became more glaring from the fact that the state was included on the list in a hurry, to the extent they forgot to change the Operation code word “BOYONA” which stands for Borno, Yobe and Nasarawa states to more suitable abbreviation, just as he expressed confidence that the Almighty would protect the innocent people of the state from the adverse effect of the emergency rule and the evil few.
The leader of the team, His Eminence Jones Ode Eruie, disclosed that they would not fold their arms and allow a few individuals to run Nigeria into tribal and religious war.
He said that the traditional institution has failed the country by not calling those leaders that are beating war drums to order because of selfish interest.
He added that 500 clergymen in the country under his organisation had dedicated their lives to the unity of the country, stressing that they were ready to sacrifice their lives as the path they were taking was at variance with that of the powers that be.
“The members of this forum who are bishops constitute the highest body in Christendom. The forum which comprises about 500 is not happy with the situation in the country. Without mincing words, our traditional rulers have failed; we clergy men must wake up to our calling and join forces with those who are fighting impunity in the nation’s interest.”
The leader of the group said they found it expedient to visit Nyako due to his leadership trait, stressing that when Nyako was a young man he joined the military to protect the sovereignty of the nation and as a political leader he has championed war against impunity in the country.
“Nyako chose Amaechi, a young man, to fight impunity in our country. We were challenged as religious leaders to join forces with you to fight enemies of democracy that are leading the country to doom.

Mixed reactions trail emergency rule extension in Borno
Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, are divided on Jonathan’s extension of the state of emergency rule imposed on Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.
The state attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Kaka Shehu Lawan, told LEADERSHIP Weekend in Maiduguri that it was a welcome development.
“We have no quarrel whatsoever with the first declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa because the president has the powers to do what he did in the interest of the citizens. We have all reaped the benefits of the emergency which is the relative peace we are enjoying today.
“The president has power to extend after the expiration of this present state of emergency rule. We all have seen how the military and civilian JTF have recorded a huge success within the last six months; Maiduguri and its environs as it is now is witnessing relative peace; the only challenge we have is in the countryside, which we believe would be taken care of during the next phase of the emergency rule.”
Spokesman of the Borno Elders Forum Dr Bulama Mali Gubio said the latest development  was a “misapplication of stratagem in the fight to quell the Boko Haram insurgency”.
“We cannot stop him from declaring an extension of the emergency rule for yet another six months. However, our problem is that it should not only end at a declaration and keeping soldiers in town; the president should let us see that the state of emergency works; let us see it working. I believe if the federal government sincerely wants this insurgency to end, it can do it in one month.”
To Mallam Mamman Idrissa, a prominent politician and businessman, “the extension of the emergency rule is like a declaration of war on three north-eastern states. If the efforts of the federal government within the last six months did not yield any fruitful result, I don’t see an extension for another six months doing anything more.”
