The minister of Interior Mr Abba Moro who disclosed this today while fielding questions from the State House correspondents, said based on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship, the 174 applications for citizenship approved by FEC included 45 by registration and 129 by naturalisation.
He said the successful applicants cut across people from Mexico, Benezeuela, South Korea, Cameroun, Thailand, Singapore, Lebanon and Syria among others.
The minister said 27 applications were rejected because the applicants did not meet the basic requirements of tax payment and ability to live without becoming economic burdens and security threats to Nigeria.
He said the interest shown by these individuals in becoming citizens of Nigeria had further proved people, especially members of position parties who claim that the nation is drifting wrong.
He said only 51 of 79 applicants whose names were submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were recommended by the anti-graft body.
He said, “After deliberations, council approved the granting of Nigerian citizenship to 45 applicants for Nigerian citizenship by registration
“The council approved the granting of Nigerian citizenship to 129 applicants by naturalisation.
“The council also approved that the applications for Nigerian citizenship be denied, in line with the recommendations of the EFCC, to 27 applicants.”
Maku said the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, reported to the council that the privatisation of the nation’s power sector was completed on Friday with the physical handing over of assets to preferred bidders.
He said that given the interest shown by the private sector, power stability would be achieved in the country in the next one or two years.
