FG Pledges Equity In Post-power Sector Privatisation

The federal government has restated its resolve to maintain an enabling environment for the electricity industry to work satisfactorily, in the post-privatisation era.
This assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali, while speaking in Abuja at the 10th International Conference on Power Systems Operation and Planning.
Igali explained that the federal government would maintain a position of non-interference, while ensuring fairness and equity between investors and electricity consumers.
Recalling the challenges of Nigeria’s electricity sector since inception in the 1890s, Igali said the only option left for government was the decisive and bold step of privatisation, especially in view of successes recorded in the banking, aviation and telecommunication sectors.
He further explained that government’s retention of the transmission component of the power chain was deliberate; pointing out that it is intended to preserve the integrity of the system.
