Akande who said this in a statement made available to Journalists, urged Nigerians to immediately rise up to the challenges posed by what he called electoral impunity in the country.
According to him, “The mess that has been made of the Anambra election by the same body saddled with ensuring that it is free and fair is indeed a bad thing. While the Anambra debacle, in which INEC apparently acted out a script written by the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represents a new low in the country’s unenviable saga of electoral impropriety, it must now signal the death knell for electoral malfeasance and brigandage in Nigeria.
“Make no mistake about it: If something drastic but lawful is not done now to stop this electoral impunity, our country is ultimately heading for the precipice. This is not about crying wolf where none exists. The wolf is here and ready to pounce. Our challenge is to stop it before it is too late.”
Akande noted that the problem has assumed a frightening dimension, saying it is now an admixture of power and impunity that could explode anytime if not checked.
Meanwhile, the opposition APC has said that unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was purged of the corrupt and compromised personnel, the Party would boycott every election that is organised by the commission.
This was the position taken by the party at the expanded interim National Executive Committee (NEC) held at the party’s headquarters, Abuja, where the Anambra gubernatorial election was discussed.
