ONITSHA—President Goodluck Jonathan will today lead top officials of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to flag off the campaign for the party’s candidate for the November 16 governorship poll in Anambra State, Mr. Tony Nwonye at the Bascilica field, Holy Trinity Catholic Cathedral, Onitsha.
The flag off is coming barely four days after the Vice President, Namadi Sambo and the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur presented Nwoye with the party’s flag at the Ekwueme Square in Awka.
Consequently, the Nwonye Campaign Organisation has advised the people of the state to ignore alleged rumours making the rounds that the presidency was sponsoring an opposition candidate for the Saturday poll.
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard at Onitsha, the Director of Media of the organisation, Mr. Chike Anyaonu said it was unfortunate, that some desperate politicians were involved in name dropping for the sake of political power.
This was even as the Campaign for Democracy, CD, has urged the police and other security agencies in Anambra to disarm vigilance groups to prevent them from being used by politicians during the governorship polls in the state.
Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, chairman of the group in the state made the appeal on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen in Onitsha.
Rumours had been rife in the state that the presidency was behind both the APGA candidate, Chief Willie Obiano and his Labour Party, LP, counterpart, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah.

Anyaonu said, “We are aware that some political parties and their candidates have been going about deceiving the people of Anambra at their campaign rallies that President Jonathan had pencilled the name of their candidates for the plum position come Saturday. This is not true.’’
