The Sultan of Sokoto and president-general, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Sa’ad III, yesterday gave N2million to three winners of the just concluded international Qu’ranic competition.
Receiving the winners of the competition in his palace yesterday, the eminent traditional ruler said Nigeria’s victory at the World Qur’anic recitation competition in Saudi Arabia had helped in projecting the country’s religious image positively on the global scene.
The Sultan, who gave N1million reward to the overall winner and N500, 000 each to the other two who came fourth and fifth, said: “We have shown the world that it is not only in football that we can make it; that we also have the ability and capability to compete with those that matter in other aspects of human endeavours and come out victorious at the end in spite of impromptu arrangement.”
While noting that the overall winner, Malam Kabir Abubakar from Kano State, in the recitation and translation of the 60 Hizf has made the country proud, the Sultan said his feat was a source of pride to the country, which should be celebrated by all Nigerians.
He stressed that in everything Allah does, there must be a reason. “This victory has indeed raised our profile among the comity of nations as a country to reckon with in terms of religion.
I am calling on our youths to always strive in the acquisition of education, particularly religious knowledge,”  he  said, adding that a Qur’anic Memorisation Centre would soon be established in the country.
Earlier, Abdulkahi Sifawa, director, Centre for Islamic Studies, Usman Fodio, Sokoto, commended the Sultan for his initiatives and support for the competitors.
