NIMASA Commences Construction Of Maritime Institute In IBB Varsity

Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commenced the construction of a multimillion naira, Institute of Maritime Studies(IMS) at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), University Lapai.

The NIMASA chief consultant architect, Alex Akpe who handed the construction firms over to the management of IBB University at Lapai over the weekend stated that the project is of immense importance to the economy of the country.

He said that this was the first phase of work for the permanent site of the institute in the university with a view to providing high standard infrastructures for the institute.

Akpe said that following the approval for the establishment of the  IMS at the  university, NIMASA decided to provide necessary structures for the immediate take-off of the institute which is the first of its kind in the north.

He enunciated the importance of the Maritime Institute to the development of Niger State and the Nigerian economy adding  that the first phase of the projects comprised of basic infrastructural facilities that would enhance learning, research and knowledge in the field of maritime studies.

While urging the contractors to exhibit high level of standard by ensuring that works are done according to specifications and as scheduled, Karpe emphasised that the projects were of immense value to NIMASA management and  would not compromise  standard.   The vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Kolo applauded the effort of the agency in seeing to the actualisation of the institute in the university.

He said that the establishment of the institute at the university would in no small measure assist in her developmental process of becoming one of the best centres of learning and research in the country, expressing appreciation to the chairperson, Senate Committee on Maritime Transportation, Senator Zaynab Kure for her roles towards actualising the dream.

The VC therefore charged the contractors to justify the resources allocated for the projects by ensuring quality works and timely delivery.

Nine projects to be embarked upon for the  take-off of the institute were, construction of library/archives, academic block, lecture auditorium, administrative complex, Management Information Centre (MIC), lecture theatre, access road, drainages, provision of electricity supply and distribution including street light as well as supply of water and its distribution.
