Members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly yesterday suspended sitting indefinitely over persistent power outage and breakdown of the power generating set used as alternative power supply to the Assembly complex.

The sudden adjournment of sitting has, however, delayed deliberations on the 2014 budget proposals submitted before it by the State governor, Hon Seriake Dickson.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the State House of Assembly, like all other areas of the state capital, has come under epileptic power supply by the power generating company in the state.

Investigations revealed that the power generating set used in the complex also exploded and caught fire during an attempt to switch it on for the Wednesday sitting.

A source said though the Assembly members had regular sessions on Monday and Tuesday, “The extent of damage could not be determined as at yesterday morning. They hurriedly suspended sitting to avoid uncomfortable sessions inside heat.”

LEADERSHIP’s walk through the State Assembly complex along the Amarata Area of the state capital revealed that the doors of most offices were opened for proper ventilation. Some others abandoned their offices and left for home as they could not endure the heat.

Public power supply in most parts of the state capital has become epileptic in the last few weeks and has encouraged the use of power generating sets in most areas and office complexes.

The special assistant to the Speaker on media and publicity, Mr Piriye Kiyaramo confirmed the development, saying the generator had a technical problem and the lawmakers will resume their normal business as soon as the problem is rectified.
