Rep Seeks Review Of Adoption Laws

A member of House of Representatives, Hon Chris Emeka Azubogu, has reiterated the need to review adoption laws in the country.

Azubogu, who represents Nnewi North/Nnewi South/ Ekwusigo federal constituency of Anambra State, stated this at the launch of a book titled, “The Role of Orphanage in Transforming the Nigerian Child” in Abuja, said that the child adoption laws in Nigeria were too stringent but lacked proper guideline.

He said while the orphanages are doing their best to raise and cater for orphans as well as vulnerable children, raising a child in a natural home was quite challenging.

He explained that adoption had become more difficult with the emergence of illegal orphanages where girls were kept to produce babies who were later sold, adding that registering orphanages with NAPTIP would help checkmate such trend.

The book reviewer, Dr Ejike Oji lamented the high mortality rate worldwide which shortens the life span of a child if he or she was not given proper care and attention.

The book, he said, made a good case about the importance of an orphanage and why Nigerians must support orphanages in order to better the lives of the orphans and other vulnerable groups.
He added that the book had a good selling point because it was well packaged and written in a simple prose and would be enjoyed by both the young and old.
