Prison Bars and CuffsA  Magistrate court sitting in Yaba, Lagos, has jailed two women for trafficking and using children to beg for alms in Victoria Island area of the state.

It was gathered that the women, identified as  Amarachi Eke, a native of Imo State and Chioma Eze, who hails from Awka, Anambra State, were arraigned at the Family Court 1 on a two-count charge of using under aged children to beg for alms.

Following the guilty plea of the accused to the charges, Magistrate Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, sentenced them to two months imprisonment each; one month for each charge and a fine of N5,000, adding that both jail terms will run concurrently.

Aje-Afunwa reasoned with the convicts to see the need to learn some useful lessons in prison and urged them to engage in “something more productive, rather than using kids to beg on the street”.

The magistrate also noted that the convicts will have to learn the hard way not to engage in anti-social behaviour, believing that the prison would transform their lives for the better.

The women were arrested at Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island recently while begging with two kids (names withheld) aged six and nine years.
