NUJ Advises Journalists To Be Security Conscious

The Chairman, Lagos State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Deji Olumoye,  on Saturday advised journalists to be security conscious as they carry out their duties.

Olumoye gave the advice when he briefed members of the union at the Council’s monthly Congress at Ladi Lawal Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

He also advised NUJ members to consider sleeping in the office at the close of work if it became risky to go home at night.

Olumoye  said journalists should avoid withdrawing money at late hours  from Automated Teller Machines  as it could expose them to criminals.

He urged them to key into the union’s insurance scheme, saying the nature of the job demanded serious security attention.

The NUJ boss  expressed sadness over the killing of Mr Toyin Obadina, the  Saturday Editor of News Watch Newspaper.

Obadina was shot by unknown gunmen on  Jan. 31 in Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.

“The report we got is that the editor closed late and was on his way home, collected some money from an ATM.

“Then gunmen that attacked him and demanded the money he collected from the machine.

“After collecting the money, one of the gunmen shot him at close a range and zoomed off.

“I was almost a victim of such people sometimes ago. I and my driver were coming home late and decided to collect some money from an ATM.

“ After collecting the money, I discovered that a strange vehicle was after us.

“When I became suspicious of the vehicle, I requested my driver to move to any where people gathered and stop.

“As soon as we stopped, the vehicle trailing us also stopped, the people inside it looked around and zoomed off,’’ he said.
