Jonathan stated this at the sensitisation/grand rally organised by the PDP in Imo to welcome some of the state’s top politicians that returned to the party from other parties.

According to him, PDP is a party known for its ideology, stability and democratic principles and the only party with a solid foundation in the country, which has not changed over the years.

The President called on all aspirants who “want to play decent politics” to identify with the party, describing it as the only credible political party in the state.

“Since we started existing our foundation has remained firm; we have not changed a single thing about the party, our ideologies, principles and slogans have remained the same.

“PDP is the only stabilising factor in Nigeria’s democracy; we’ve continued to promote democracy and to bring its dividends to all Nigerians.

“PDP is the party that promotes democratic principles, beliefs and obeys the rule of law and has a sense of inclusiveness,” he said.

The president said the party was in Imo for a unity rally and not campaign and to celebrate the returnees.

He urged members of the party in the state to ensure the party remained united and stronger as it was in 1999.

Jonathan congratulated the returnees for indicating interest again in the party which he said was created for all to realise their objectives.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that those that returned to the party included Chief Achike Udenwa, Sen. Chris Anyanwu, Mr Mike Ahamba (SAN), Chief Ifeanyi Ararume and Chief Cosmos Iwu.

The president commended the party faithful in the state for keeping the flag of the party flying and urged them to work with the returnees to realise the party’s mandate in 2015.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who welcomed the returnees, said their return to the party was a “clear testimony of the success of the transformation agenda of the President”.

Sambo commended the people of the state for their support to the president in the 2011 elections and urged them to double their efforts to ensure the PDP regained power in the state.

Also speaking Senate President David Mark said the PDP would intensify its efforts to ensure democracy dividends were brought to the Imo people.

He commended the Imo people for the turnout at the rally which he said was an indication of their readiness to accept the PDP in 2015.

“We are grateful for the massive support we’ve received from you today; from your turnout today, it is clear that Imo is anxious for the PDP to return to power in your state.

“We will continue to perform well and to ensure that Imo continues to enjoy the dividends of democratic governance,” he said.

He called on the PDP in the state to see 2011 when it lost to another party as history and work at ensuring that it regained power in 2015.

“PDP in the state has made a statement by this gathering. What has happened in Imo and in Kano recently is an evidence of how many people the party is reclaiming,” he said.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, urged the party members to practise politics of inclusion and reconciliation.

He described the returnees as foundation members of the party who had come back to “the party that caters for the interests of party members and Nigerians in general”.

Anenih advised the Imo PDP members to be united as it was the only factor that would enable them to recapture the state.

He called on Imo people to support the party and the president as they did in 2011.

He urged them to pray for the peace and unity of the country and the success of the president’s transformation agenda. (NAN)
