The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka High Commissioner to Nigeria, A.S.P. Liyanage, has secured a top-level tour of Sri Lanka for Nigeria’s cricket team as they prepare for the forthcoming Cricket World League Division Five in Malaysia where they will hope to secure promotion to Division Four.
The 10-day pre-tournament playing tour, according to the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Emeka Onyeama, will pitch Nigeria against high-ranking teams and world-class players in Test Series.
“We want to use this opportunity of interacting with one of the top eight cricketing nations in the world to see that the game of cricket is sustained in Nigeria,” Onyeama told LEADERSHIP Sports.
Despite funding challenges, cricket in Nigeria has significantly improved, rising from division eight to five within two years, thereby making the world to sit and take notice.
Emeka Onyeama also called on the National Sports Commission to seize the opportunity and provide facilities for the game. “Nigeria is no longer hidden in the eyes of the world when it comes to cricket. So, we need to get sporting facilities because you cannot be playing in Division Four without interacting tours and you cannot do that with your backyard dirty,” he added.
The team, which has been in camp since January 20, will depart for Malaysia en route Sri Lanka on February 21.
