UMUAHIA — ABIA State governor, Chief Theodore Orji has said that his administration expended N400 million on the rehabilitation of dilapidated Ohafia-Arochukwu Federal Road before the Federal Government waded in to award the contract and took over the job.

According to Governor Orji, the Federal Government has since taken over the road, awarded contract for its rehabilitation while work on it has since commenced.

Governor Orji disclosed this while reacting to a statement credited to one Onwuka Ukwa of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, who alleged that the governor said he would not repair the Ohafia-Arochukwu Road, being a federal road.

Orji denied ever saying he would not repair the road, adding that before the Federal Government took over the road, his administration had spent about N400 million to make it motorable.

“The road has been like that even during the tenure of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and I have consistently lamented the condition of the road until we started work on it before the Federal Government took over,” he said.

Governor Orji said that Abia State government would rehabilitate all the roads in the state, irrespective of who owned them.

He disclosed that his government was working on the Ndioji Abam-Ndiokereke Road, also in Arochukwu, and had gone very far on the long stretch of the road designed to give the people a sense of belonging and ease their difficulty.

He stated that he had severally visited contractor who was awarded the Arochukwu-Ohafia federal road to ensure the job would be done.
