Briefing newsmen in Awka on Wednesday on the second round of the National Immunisation Plus Days (NIPDs) holding from April 12 to April 15, Ikeakor said the state had no record of polio virus in the last 16 years.
The commissioner, who was represented by the ministry’s Director of Primary Healthcare, Dr Chukwudi Okoye, said it would continue to ensure a free and effective immunisation.
According to him, the state emerged the overall best in the South East in 2012 and will maintain the tempo in the years ahead.
Ikeakor said the exercise would be launched by Gov. Willie Obiano on April 11 at the General Hospital, Umuleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
He said that the exercise would hold in all the government health centres and designated posts such as churches, mosques, schools, house-to-house, motor parks and markets for the children under five years.
The commissioner urged mothers and caregivers to participate in the exercise.
Ikeakor said that more than one million children under five years and 1,147,506 women of child bearing age were targeted in the exercise. (NAN)
