Dr Sam Amadi, NERC Chairman, made the suggestion when the Nigeria Electricity Supply and Installations Standards (NESIS) presented a document to the commission by the Chairman of the Technical Working Group (TWG), Mr Foluseke Somolu.
He expressed optimism that the document would go a long way in improving standards in the electricity industry.
“We expect a high quality document because of the composition of the technical working group, made up of lawyers, professors, and engineers,” he said.
The NERC boss said that the Electrical Installation Regulation, promulgated in 1996, had become obsolete but would serve as the basis for development and updated regulation.
He said that the TWG effort on the document since 2012 was an indication that crowd-sourcing was more valuable than outsourcing to consultants.
Amadi said that the new regulations would ensure fluid generation, transmission and distribution in the electricity industry needed for the ongoing national electricity reforms to succeed.
He said that the document was vital for the development for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry because it covered all aspects of the value chain in the electricity industry.
Earlier, Somolu said that they committed a lot of efforts in compiling the document and expressed optimism that the document would go a long way in entrenching standards in the sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that TWG comprises members representing a wide spectrum of electricity industry stakeholders, including, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Standards Organisation of Nigeria and Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Others are the Federal Ministry of Power, Lagos State Electricity Board, Metering Code Panels, Distribution Code Review Panel, representatives of the Distribution Companies and Licenced Electricity Contractors Association of Nigeria.
The Rural Electrification Agency, academics from three Nigerian universities, two law firms, and NERC are also members. (NAN)
