Fervent prayers and peaceful co-existence have been identified as what can move Nigeria, Africa and the entire universe forward.

Nigeria’s vice president Namadi Sambo made the assertion in Gombe while addressing a mammoth crowd at the Abubakar Umar Memorial Stadium, Gombe, venue for this year’s Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass International Maulud celebration.

Sambo said with prayers and peaceful coexistence among Muslims and followers of other religions, there would be progress in every part of the world.

He therefore urged Nigerians to live in peace with one another for their own benefit and the nation at large.

Sambo was optimistic that Nigeria would overcome the challenges she is passing through at the moment. Speaker of the House of Representatives Ahaji Aminu Tambuwal solicited more prayers to sustain the peace being enjoyed. He said: “I call on all the citizens of our great country Nigeria to continue praying for peace and for God to bring to an end the troubles we are currently facing.”

Tambuwal enjoined Muslims to abide by the tenets of the religion, which preaches peace.

He commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in an accident on their way to the venue of the occasion.

Host governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State said the Maulaud celebration was timely, considering the socio-economic and security challenges troubling the nation.

Dankwambo urged Muslims to emulate virtues like truthfulness, discipline and tolerance for which the late Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass was known.

Thirty-seven people reportedly lost their lives in an accident on their way to Gombe for the Maulud celebration, while another lost his life due to suffocation at the venue.

The well-attended event drew participants from the 36 states of Nigeria as well as from countries like Senegal, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria.
