Following recent terrorist attacks on the country’s capital, Abuja, the House of Representatives yesterday detailed its Committee on ICT, Public Safety and National Security to investigate the failure of the Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) installed in Lagos and Abuja to detect criminal activities.

The committee is expected to report back to the House in two weeks.

The resolution was a fallout of a motion by Hon Saviour Udoh (Akwa-Ibom/PDP), which was unanimously adopted without debate.

In lead debates, Udoh told the lawmakers that the contract for the installation of the CCTVs was awarded by the federal government during the late Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration at the cost of $470million.

He recalled that the federal government had also awarded a contract for the installation of 2000 digital solar-powered cameras – 1000 for Lagos and 1000 for Abuja, 37 switch rooms, MW backbone, 37 Coalition Emergency Response System, 38 Video Conference Sub-system, 37 E-Police System, 6 Emergency Communication Vehicles and 1.5 subscriber lines.
