Enugu to commence export of pineapples to Europe


The Enugu State Government is to commence the shipment of Pineapple to
Europe this year from the 150 hectares of the Enugu-San Carlos
Pineapple farm in the state.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke announced
this while briefing the press at the end of the State Executive
Council meeting chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime at
the Government House, Enugu.

Mr. Ugwoke also disclosed that the council approved the introduction
of livestock (cattle) and invests in banana production in the farm
jointly owned by the state government and San Carlos, an American
based farm conglomerate.

According to the Commissioner for the take-off of the new projects in
the farm, the council approved the sum of over eight hundred and
eighty million naira (N880,873,524.00) as the state equity counterpart
contribution of the investment cost.

The Commissioner stated that the council approved the sum of over one
billion naira (N1,167,789,201.36k) for the completion of construction
work on two major inter-local government rural roads in parts of the
state.

A breakdown of the total amount shows that the sum of over six hundred
and thirty-nine million naira (639,523,767.17k) is for the
construction of Akpugo - Ezedike – Nkpologu road as addendum to the
completion of the on-going Eke – Ebe – Egede – Affa - Akpakwume – Nze
– Aku – Akpugo road.  Also the remaining over five hundred and
twenty-eight million naira (N528,265,434.11k) is for the construction
of 9th Mile bypass from Amankwo – Ameke Ngwo as an addendum to the
ongoing contract for the reconstruction of New Market – Milliken Hill
– Ngwo – 9th Mile Corner road.

He said that during the meeting, the council approved the sum of over
forty-eight million naira (N48,891,251.06k) for the implementation of
the Health Commodity Supply Component of the 2013 MDG Local Government
Track for six local governments of Awgu, Enugu East, Igbo-Eze South,
Nkanu West, Nsukka and Udi.

Under the programme (2013 MDG-CGS) cycle various hospital equipment,
medicines and other consumables for the health care facilities in the
state would be provided.

The Information Commissioner told the Press that the council approved
the extension of a local Geoids System (technology in the state for
satellite systems).  The project which the sum of two hundred million
naira was approved will help in forestalling flooding, construction of
bridges, roads, among others as well as help keep the state in line
with current global trends.

Mr. Ugwoke stated that the council gave approval that a draft bill for
a law for the upgrade of the State College of Agriculture and
Agro-Entrepreneurship Iwollo Oghe to Enugu State Polytechnic should be
forwarded to the State House of Assembly for consideration and
possible passage.

According to the Commissioner, the bill if passed into law, and the
school established,  would help reduce the hardship faced by many
candidates seeking admission into higher institution and also
facilitate the steady and direct inflow of material, financial and
other resources from outside the state (TET Fund and PTDF).

Also the hosting of the 2014 Enugu Fiesta, Culture and Tourism package
was approved by the council.

The International Annual Feaster which kicks off from December 5th –
21st will feature events like Arts Exhibition, Street Carnival,
Masquerading, Umoja from South Africa, Road block, Nwada-Igbo Pageant
and Old School Night by Mike Ejeagha, Victor Uwaifor, Bright Chimezie,
Ras Kimom and Paulson Kalu among others.
