Jonathan saddended over Igwe’s death, expresses sympathy

Abuja –  President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed shock and sadness over the death of Mr Dimgba Igwe, a veteran journalist and Vice Chairman of the Sun Newspapers.

Igwe died on Saturday morning after he was hit by a car while jogging along his street at the Okota area of Lagos.

In a statement on Saturday evening, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, said Jonathan received the news of Igwe’s death with shock and sadness.

The statement said; “on behalf of himself, his family and the Federal Government of Nigeria, Jonathan extends heartfelt commiserations to the publishers of the Sun newspapers, and the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

“The President also commiserates with all friends and associates of Igwe for whom his unexpected death must be exceedingly painful.

“Jonathan believes that the late Igwe will always be remembered as a hardworking and dependable professional.

“Through his writings as columnist, he demonstrated a special ability to convey the truth and his convictions in lucid, compelling prose, and in a style that was shorn of cant and foppery.

“As they mourn him, the President enjoins Igwe’s family, friends and associates to be consoled by the knowledge that he put his God-given abilities to the best possible use.”

The deceased, according to the statement, lived a purposeful life that was totally devoted to the defence of truth and the public interest.

It added that Igwe also dedicated his life to the promotion of the highest standards of his chosen profession of journalism.

“Jonathan prays that God Almighty will grant them the fortitude to bear the loss of the forthright journalist and media administrator, and also grant his soul, peaceful repose’’, the statement said.
