Lagos state to boost food production by 25% before 2018

The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives says it is working towards increasing food production in the state by 25 per cent before 2018.

Mr Gbolahan Lawal, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperative, disclosed this after inspecting the Lagos State Cooperatives Federation Secretariat under construction in Lagos on Tuesday.

Gbolahan said that the provision of farm inputs, farm settlements and acquisition of farm lands outside the state were steps taken to ensure the achievement of the 25 per cent increase in food production.
“We are presently producing about 10 per cent which is not enough, even the 25 per cent is not enough to feed the over 22 million residents of Lagos.

“We have a lot of commercial farmers who have come into the agricultural space to support what we are doing,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that the ministry would join the rest of the world to celebrate the World Food Day on October 16.

Gbolahan said this would boost food security, reduce poverty and empower farmers and agricultural produce processing in the state.

He commended the contributions of the general public towards driving the objectives of the state in agriculture. (NAN)
