Barely hours after former military president, Ibrahim
Babangida, declared his support for the presidential candidate of the
All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari ahead of next
month’s presidential elections, Nigerians have been expressing their
opinions on the development.
It would be recalled that Babangida, while receiving Buhari at his hilltop mansion in Minna, Niger State on Monday, reportedly stated that they (retired generals) will support Buhari’s aspiration to become Nigeria’s president after ruling the country as a military Head of State in 1983.
According to reports, Babanginda while addressing the gathering at his house “called for peaceful conduct during the elections urging contestants to be magnanimous in victory”
While endorsing Buhari, the Minna-born General reportedly stated: “Some of us are fading away but he (Buhari) is still going strong. We will support you in this cause.”
Since the news broke that Babangida has declared his support for Buhari in next month’s presidential pollse, Nigerians, both home and abroad, have been commenting on social media on the development.
While many people believe Babangida’s support would boost Buhari’s political aspiration, others are of the opinion that it would make no significant difference in the outcome of next month’s elections.
Below are some of the mixed reactions that trail Babangida’s support for Buhari against incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan:

What
shall it profit APC to have OBJ as navigator, IBB as moral compass, BAT
as pilot, GMB as captain yet sail their ship into the sea?

@DemolaRewaju surely they shall gather but there gathering is not of God and they shall surely be scatter

Politics unites even the greatest enemies. The only thing that can bring GMB & IBB together. I pray its for the best

I am delighted to have you as a guest, I know what you can do. If perhaps you get there, be the change. I told #GMB pic.twitter.com/PGSWfxlGR6
— Ibrahim B. Babangida (@General_IBB) January 16, 2015
“@SomaKudi: But IBB is everything but CHANGE. :(“….yea he isn’t but in politics, you need everyone. He has a vote, GMB needs it.

Nigerians are so short sighted… IBB endorses #GMB every one cheers?!! Wow… #Amnesia
— C.O.G (@AmmoniaFlows) January 19, 2015
I
don’t get it. I thought IBB endorsed GEJ 2 weeks ago. How come he
endorsed GMB today? When will he outgrow this Maradona lifestyle?

Meanwhile, it was gathered that among those that accompanied Buhari
to visit Babangida in Minna included his runnubg mate, Prof. Yemi
Osinbanjo, the Director-General of the Buhari/Osinbanjo Campaign
Organisation and Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, former
chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, former governor of Lagos State,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Osun state, Chief
Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Senatorial Aspirant in Kogi State, Hon. Dino
Melaye.
It would be recalled that Babangida had in a recent interview
with a team from Zero Tolerance (ZT), a quarterly magazine published by
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, stated that he had to
overthrow Buhari in 1985 because the former Head of State was
frustrating Nigerians at that time.
