An unidetified suicide bomber has attacked a police station in the Turkish city of Istanbul  on 6 January, leaving at least two officers injured.

According to local reports, a woman armed with an explosive device hit a police station in the city’s tourist hub of Sultanahmet.

The details of the attack are sketchy and scattered as some reporters say that police exchanged fire with the attacker, while others say the assailant had detonated a hand grenade.
“Right now one police officer is in hospital in a critical condition and another is lightly injured… The female bomber lost her life,” Governor Vasip Sahin said.

Police have sealed off streets, public transport has been suspended in the area. The woman’s nationality and identity is yet to be established. It is the second attack on police in a week, after a man threw grenades at the prime minister’s office in Istanbul.
