Boko Haram militants reportedly attempted to seize Biu, the largest town of Southern Borno state and have been successfully repeled, reports indicate.

Premium Times reports with reference to the locals that the insurgents stormed the town today morning.

One of the residents, Kaka Ali, said that upon invading Biu, the fighters moved to take over the army barracks.

“Our boys have already taken strategic position waiting for them, at the moment, the soldiers are battling them. All we can hear now are gunshots from the direction of the barracks.”

UPDATE
According to the Twitter account of Nigerian Defence Headquarters, the attack was repelled and several militants were arrested.

It comes days after the capture of Baga, another strategic town of the state. Additionally, it was reported only yesterday that Boko Haram attacked Askira forcing locals out of their homes.
