The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police in
charge of Zone 1, covering Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, Tambari Yabo
Muhammad, has explained how he averted an attack against President
Goodluck Jonathan during a political rally held in Katsina State recently.
According to Muhammad, who spoke on Monday during a workshop for police officers on how to ensure violence-free elections, he mobilised officers to avert an attack against the President by some thugs in Katsina State.
He said: “I received information that some thugs had gathered at the roundabout leading to the stadium where the campaign would take place, I decided to go there and assess the situation myself.
“On reaching the scene, I saw the thugs carrying all sorts of weapons. If the president’s convoy had passed through that area at that moment, anything could have happened.
“But I personally persuaded the thugs to drop their weapons. I even took away some of the weapons myself.”
Muhammad, while warning youths against carrying weapons, stated that anybody caught with weapons before, during and after the upcoming general elections would be arrested and prosecuted.
“When you slap somebody or rape someone’s daughter, you have also
lost your right but police officers should always follow legal
procedures in tackling problems.”
The AIG also also warned Police personnel against receiving gifts of food or drinks from politicians or members of the public during elections so as not to be poisoned.
