News just coming in states that the Nigerian Army has
reclaimed Baga, a fishing town in Borno State after hours of fierce gun
battle with Boko Haram insurgents.
The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, according to Premium Times, made this known on February 21, Saturday afternoon, via his twitter account stating: “Troops on Saturday afternoon captured #BAGA after fierce battle with terrorists”.
General Olukolade Indicated that Boko Haram suffered heavy casualties as troops were mopping up on-going operations.
It would be recalled that Boko Haram attacked Baga early in January after sacking the base of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the fishing town.
Some residents of Baga, who escaped last month’s onslaught by the insurgents, disclosed to Daily post that the Islamic fundamentalists hoisted their flag at the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force.
The recapture of Baga and its surrounding towns will add to a sense of security during the forth coming general elections which were postponed over fears of escalating Boko Haram attacks.
