Nigerian Army Uncover Heaps Of Arms Left By Boko Haram In Baga

The Nigerian army has revealed that in its current wiping up operations in the strategic town of Baga, has exposed stocks of arms and ammunition left by the beaten and fleeing Boko Haram insurgents.

Major General Chris Olukolade, the director of defence information, confirmed this with graphic evidence of a stockpile of different arms abandoned by the terrorists.

The major general said: “Troops engaged in cordon and search in Baga continue to discover more arms of various backgrounds and shapes abandoned in some houses and the surroundings by fleeing terrorists.

“Heaps of weapons most of which were strange-looking or destroyed are still being gathered. Many abandoned or destroyed motorcycles have also been discovered“.

Unfortunately, Olukolade noted, a soldier was stabbed while another was shot during a close quarter battle which ensued as troops engaged in cordon and search caught up with some of the escaping Boko Haram members on Sunday evening, February 22.
 
The defence spokesperson said that as part of the mop-up operation, a number of persons who claimed to be locals are also being questioned in order to assure their identity and intentions.
Olukolade added that a group consisting mostly of women continued to hail and cheer the soldiers as they provide a thorough search in the area.

“Wanting to be sure the group was not working for the terrorists despite the excitement, they had to be placed under watch.

“The cordon and search as well as patrol of the localities continue while the offensive on terrorists is progressing in other areas of the theatre of the counter terrorist campaign“, he added.

However, after a spate of recent successes recorded against the Boko Haram insurgents in the northeastern parts of the country, the Nigerian army has been put on red alert for any insurgents’ leader, Abubakar Shekau, who is considered to be badly looking for escape routes.

It is understood that the military have been ordered to try at all costs to take Shekau alive so that he would face justice.

The Nigerian army has recaptured Baga, the town which suffered a deadly massacre at the beginning of the year, after hours of fierce gun battles with Boko Haram terrorists.

Following the postponement of the general elections by six weeks, the Nigerian army has started to achieve some success in the war against Boko Haram.

Boko Haram may also have suffered internal trouble. Recently, leaflets condemning their leader Shekau were dropped from a helicopter in Adamawa state, supposedly by a breakaway faction in the group, although there is suspicion as to their authenticity .
