Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed at least 34 persons including a lawmaker on Saturday morning in Gombe and Borno states.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Umar Aminu, a policeman and six others were killed by the insurgents who attacked Dukku and Nafada local government areas.

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen also killed 25 people and set fire to homes in Buratai, Borno State hours before Saturday’s general elections.

A source told NAN that the insurgents, who came from Yobe, initially attacked Shole, Birin Bolewa and Birin Fulani towns of Nafada and later attacked Dukku.

There was confusion in the two areas as some voters left the polling units but others later returned to be accredited, the source said.

Spokesman for the police in the state, Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the report, adding that details of the incident would be given after investigations were completed.

He said, “There was an attack on the outskirts of Nafada in attempt to disrupt the elections.

“A joint team of military and policemen promptly moved to Dukku and pushed the insurgents to the bush.”

Reacting to the death of his colleague, member representing Akko North Constituency at the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Gidado Lawanti, described Aminu’s death as “unfortunate”.

NAN reports that Aminu was seeking reelection to the state assembly election on April 11.

A nurse at the nearest major hospital, in Biu, told Agence France Presse that the 32 injured who were receiving care also reported that many were decapitated during the Borno attack.

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, who lamented the killings, said about 25 persons were killed while about 30 others were injured.

“Boko Haram burnt down the community (Buratai) killing 25 people and injuring about 30,” Shettima told reporters before casting his vote.

“It is a sad development; my commissioner of education, who is incidentally from Buratai, was there to console the people and took part in their burial. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”

A resident of the town, Garba Buratai, who spoke to reporters on the telephone, gave the same casualties figure as the governor.
