‘Boko Haram Will Be Wiped Out’

Colonel Augustine Akobundu (rtd), the minister of State for Defence has noted that the Nigerian Army is resolute in its bid to wipe out Boko Haram.

The minister disclosed this during his familiarization visit to the Army headquarters in Abuja yesterday, April 21, where he praised the men of the army for their recent gains against the terrorists.

According to The Sun, he that even though the successes came with a lot of challenges, the President was committed to ensuring that the military turns the tide against the insurgents.

He said: “In the face of daunting challenges, very grave challenges with deficient armament holding, you upturned the balance against the insurgents. It is heartwarming to note that you brought resourcefulness; innovations to match the political will that the President exhibited in making sure that you turn the tide against the insurgents.

As we speak today, I am aware that you just have one major objective to deal with and this country will be cleared of all forms of insurgency. I know it has not been easy; in the process you have lost so many officers and men; families have been rendered fatherless. It is painful they paid the supreme price.’’

Also present at the occasion was the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-General Kenneth Minimah, who explained that apart from the Sambisa forest, troops had liberated virtually all territories hitherto seized by the terrorists in the North-East.

Meanwhile, in spite of having been pushed out of many towns in the Northeastern Nigeria, Boko Haram still caries out pockets of attacks in the region.

The group recently launched a rocket attack on an army vehicle in the northeast town of Baga, killing two soldiers.

Six others sustained serious injuries when their vehicle hit a mine planted by the insurgents just outside the town in Borno state on Sunday, April 20.

In January, Boko Haram launched a massive attacked on Baga killing hundreds in what was feared to have been the worst massacre in the six-year of  the groups terrorism.
