The Chief Imam of Ibadanland and President General, League of Imams and Alfas in South West states, including Edo and Delta states, Sheikh Baosari Suara Haruna III, has died.
He was 93.
The cleric, according to the President, Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, died early Friday morning after a brief illness.
He would be buried Thursday in Ibadan, in line with Islamic tradition, Mr. Balogun said.
One of Sheikh Haruna’s well-known last public outings was on March 25, three days to the recent presidential election, when muslims from all walks of life gathered at the Eid Praying ground in Ibadan to offer special prayer for the nation.
That prayer was called by the Muslim Ummah of South- West Nigeria (MUSWEN), and the respected cleric presided over the session.
Mr. Haruna told that gathering that the prayer was necessary in view of the ongoing general elections.
The Sheikh was one of Nigeria’s most respected Islamic clerics.
