Politicians should go home after voting - Edo REC

Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Mr. Mike Igini has called on politicians in the state to return home after casting their vote on Saturday.

Igini made the call after a closed door meeting with security chiefs in the state over preparation for Saturday’s polls.


Two more Commissioners of Police were also said to have arrived the state over the April 11 polls. Also present at the meeting was the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Idris Haruna.

He said, “Some politicians have the habit of moving around after casting their vote.

“The restriction of movement on Saturday is total to the extent that until men and materials are at the last stage of collation, the elections are not over.

Igini also defended the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct senatorial elections in six local government areas in the state. He said the senatorial elections in the affected areas were suspended because the returning collating officer was unable to make a return.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi said armed policemen would be on patrol at strategic locations in the state to forestall any unpleasant development during the elections.

He added that eight persons had been arrested by the command for various electoral offences committed during the March 28 elections.

He said, “Such offences would be prosecuted by the INEC and at the appropriate time you would be properly briefed.

“Members of the public are advised to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and allow the INEC officials to carry out their duties in a peaceful atmosphere.”
