Mr. Hassan Umar, who commenced trekking from Lagos to Maiduguri, arrived in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday night in continuation of his journey.
Umar, 36, who is from Borno State, commenced the trekking on Friday.
He said he works with a construction firm, Shelter Care Company, in Lagos since 2005, and had been living in Lagos since 2000.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, he said the trekking was in fulfillment of his promise to cover the distance if the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), won the 2015 presidential election.
He stated that the trekking was not for him to derive any material gain, but mainly to rejoice with Buhari, the president-elect, over his victory.
He urged Buhari to ensure that the youths were empowered.
Umar said, “What prompted me to embark on this journey is to challenge the youth of this country to see this as tourism. Because this is democracy in this country. Buhari is actually for the masses.
“I’m very happy for him (Buhari). He made us proud as youths. Because this new government, we hope, will empower the youths of Nigeria for us to know the benefits of being in democracy.”
