BREAKING NEWS: Wali Replaces Jega As INEC Chairman

Nigeria’s election coordinating body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has named its National Commissioner, Ambassador Mohammad Wali, as successor to Professor Attahiru Jega, who formally bows out of the commission as chairman today (Tuesday).

Nigeria’s election coordinating body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has named its National Commissioner, Ambassador Mohammad Wali, as successor to Professor Attahiru Jega, who formally bows out of the commission as chairman today (Tuesday).


Jega, who took over from Professor Maurice Iwu, assumed office on June 8, 2010 during President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Wali who hails from Sanyima town in Tambuwal Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State, north-west Nigeria, would, however, be acting INEC Chairman till August 11, 2015, when his tenure ends.

Before his appointment as INEC National Commissioner, Wali was an Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and Chief Executive Officer, Development Strategies International (DSI).

He is a member of various committees of INEC and the Chairman of the Tenders Board.
