Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, has assured Nigerians that his government will study the report by the human rights group, Amnesty International, accusing the Nigerian army of being responsible for the deaths of 8,000 convicts.
In a report published on June 3, Wednesday, Amnesty International blamed the army of widespread torture and extrajudicial killings in the war against the Boko Haram insurgency.

The document listed senior military commanders, comprising serving and past service chiefs, who should be examined for possible war crimes.
President Buhari said he will review the report and act properly.
Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesperson, said in a comment in Niamey, Niger Republic, that the president has received the report which he said covers many alarming accusations.
Buhari said: “I assure you that your report will be looked into.”
He added that without meaning to prejudgment the outcome of any investigation, Nigerians needed to be reassured that “this administration will leave no stone unturned to promote the rule of law, and deal with all cases of human rights abuses”.
“Respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law are the life and soul of the democratic system. We will not tolerate or condone impunity and reckless disregard for human rights,” the president said.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague has recently said there is inadequate evidence tying Nigeria’s army to methodical atrocities targeting civilians.
