Popular Ex- governor Surrenders To EFCC

Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He is being interrogated for allegedly laundering over N300 billion during his tenure.

Vanguard reports that the former governor headed to the commission’s head office at about 6pm for the interrogation.

Apart from the N300 billion he allegedly took from the coffers of the state, an EFCC source hinted that Sheriff would also be questioned over N13 billion supposedly withdrawn from the local government joint account.

Sheriff is said to have clarified that the money in question was spent on some infrastructural projects in preparation for the inauguration of his successor in 2011.

In contrast, EFCC said the project was neither executed nor the money accounted for “I can confirm to you that the former governor of Borno State is with us and we cannot say for how long our operatives will keep him. We really want to know the truth from him before deciding on whether there is enough evidence to charge him to court or not,” the official said.

The anti-graft commission planed to declare Sheriff wanted last week after several invitations extended to him were ignored.

However, Sheriff, like former Adamawa governor, Murtala Nyako who also surrendered on Monday for laundering N15billion, handed himself over for questioning.
