Ramadan: An Opportunity To Turn A New Leaf

Editor’s note: This article shows the opportunity that Ramadan provides for Muslims to change their ways and be retrospective. Abstaining from a bad behavious for a month during Ramadan is enough to make a person change forever

How does a person turn a new leaf? The response is simple. It is just by moving away from a present state to another majorly moving from a morally deficit life to a morally upright one and having excellent relationship with someone’s Creator. This I believe are the ingredients needed to become a renewed individual. The month of Ramadan is a very good period to make this possible. However, everyone should know that the ball is in his or her court. It depends on the way the ball is played that brings about self renewal. If a person decides to play it according to his own whims and caprices, he had himself to blame if he gets an appaling result. On the other hand, if the person plays it right because he craves for a good result, then the glory would be his own. These two scenarios painted are what determine if a person fasting would grab the opportunity at his beck and call in Ramadan to become a better creature.

Sequel to the above is what Allah says in chapter 17 verses 13-15 of His Book of Knowledge: “And for every person, We have imposed his fate upon his neck and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. It will be said, ‘Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant.’ Whoever is guided is only guided for the benefit of his soul. And whoever errs only errs against his soul. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a Messenger.”

Allah is telling mankind that they need not to delay taking a right decision by U turn to the path of Godliness. What does this mean? It means that as Muslims are fasting presently, there is room for a person with attitude problems to leave all the morally and islamically wrong things he is still involved in before Ramadan began.

A fasting Muslim who abstains from alcohol and illicit sexual intercourse between the time for Sahuur and Iftaar, but still return to these evils everyday he breaks his fast has no excuse not to leave them forever. If he could do away with haram for 14 hours, it is possible he can summon all the courage to become ‘a clean man.’

The son of Adam was advised by his Creator in the Glorious Qur’an in chapter 2 verses 168 and 169 that: “O mankind, eat whatever is on earth that is lawful (halaal) and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed he is to you a clear enemy. He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know.”

Generally, people should be cautious when they are advised or warned against as bad behaviour by Allah, His Messengers and Muslim.Scholars. People should not justify their wrong way of life with untenable reasons. All they should continue to say is that, ‘by Allah’s grace, we pray for a change of heart for good.’ No other month offers man the opportunity for self and spiritual renewal other than Ramadan. This is because a great number of Muslims who had many character blemishes before they began fasting do testify that they always drop one or more bad habits before Ramadan ends.

In the words of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon his soul) in a Sahih Bukhari hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) said, “By Him Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a person observing fast is better with Allah than the smell (a type of very expensive fragrance).” Allah says because a fasting person has left his food, drink and sexual desires for My Sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward the fasting person for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.” What does a person wants during Ramadan if not a non-measurable reward for his fast? Therefore, an entrance that has been wide opened for Muslims to become better individuals should be entered with dignity.

There might still be some Muslims who have not allowed Ramadan pass through them since they started fasting. They come up with all manners of excuses to personally justify their wrong actions. They should know that often opportunity comes once; if it is not properly used, it could slip away and never come back

As Ramadan fast is now more than ten, it is not too late for anyone dragging his feet to join the success train called Ramadan lessons in order to become a better person as there is no assurance that everybody who participated in this year Ramadan fast would do so come next year!
