Editor’s note: Mondays are special days and to Lagosians, it’s a day they that means different things to different people. While a few people welcome it with warm embraces, most people hate it. Here are 5 reasons why Lagosians have a special kind of hatred for Mondays.

Owambe Weekend

Hardly a weekend goes by without a party in Lagos. Owambe parties are scattered all over the place especially among the Yoruba people who always look for every opportunity to cook plenty and display their aso ebi. These parties can sap the energy out of you whether you are the organizer or just a guest. There is music in the background to make dancing irresistible. If you were the organizer, your effort to please all your guest and gate crashers couldn’t have been an easy one. Its understandable then you’re wearing a crease on your forehead and hating the fact that today is Monday.

Time Out With Friends And Family

Weekend provides a lot of Lagosians the opportunity to have a wonderful time with friends and catch up on the latest gist over bottles of beer in a bar. For others, it’s a great time to spend with family and de-stress. The fulfilling excitement is enough reason to hate Mondays as it brings with it the fact that serious work has started.

Traffic

Nobody likes to be stuck in traffic and Mondays are especially hectic for Lagosians. Somehow, the number of drivers and commuters seem to increase on Mondays and people are in a mad rush to get to work. It doesn’t help matters that this usually result in accidents that leave a long trial on motionless cars and drivers frustratingly honking their horns. Being in a commercial bus is worse as you clean well ironed shirt might get dirty and wet from being jostled with other passengers in the airless vehicles. No wonder, Mondays are hell.

Change

If you ply the popular Danfo in Lagos, Mondays are frustrating days. You’ve already spent your money during the weekend and had rushed to the ATM on Monday morning. Most ATMs dispense N1000 notes only. The conductor is already screaming that you should come in with your change as he doesn’t plan to buy Gala in order to give anybody any change. You hop into the bus hoping that other passengers will hold their N100 and bail you out of the looming mess. Unfortunately, they’re all brandishing N1000 notes too. After enduring insults from the conductor, you are paired with another passenger in an unsolicited ‘marriage’. Both of you have to find a way to split the money but your partner is not ready to buy La casera so you have to move around like Siamese twins asking people for change. The time is running out and your boss is calling your phone. Why won’t you hate Mondays?

Tension

Lagosians cannot but deal with rising tensions on Mondays.  Everybody seems to be sitting on gun powder and the slightest provocation can result in a brutal exchange of fists. There is deadline to meet at work and you seem to be behind schedule because you got to work late. Somehow, there is less productivity on Mondays which can be annoying considering all the efforts put into it. The body seems to be slowly readjusting itself to the new week after all the excitement of the weekend. Arghh! You hate Mondays.
