Why I Am The Best Man For Senate President- Saraki

Senator Bukola Saraki has explained why he believes that he is the best man to head Nigeria’s Senate at the 8th National Assembly.

The chairman, senate committee on environment, who was speaking during a television programme monitored in Lagos, disclosed that the next leader of the Nigerian senate must be one who can bring all members together and be the president of all 109 members.

Saraki is in direct contention for the post of the number three citizen of Nigeria with Senator Ahmed Lawan, chairman, senate committee on public account, whom the northwestern senators have tipped to emerge as the winner of the election.

The former governor of Kwara state revealed also that there are a number of things which the new senate president must bring to the table when he emerges winner of the election, including purposeful leadership, among others, which he believes that he possesses.

“There are a number of things that I will bring to the table. There must be purposeful leadership because Nigerians want to connect to the national assembly that will support the people and bring development to the country. One must be interested in how we handle tax and power development.

“When one gets there, one has to sit down quickly and look at the priority bills, that is a very important thing to deal with. The the budget process should be also improved on and more openness in how we do our things at the national assembly.

“We must reform oversight as well in the senate,” he explained during the programme early Thursday morning.

Speaking further, Saraki noted with assurance and confidence that, “the rules of the senate are very clear, ranking makes you compete and not to mean that you get the seat. We have to think of how to make Nigeria work and see who best can make that happen”.On how important the party’s support is for his quest, the APC chieftain averred that it is very important to get the backing of one’s party and added quickly that he has the maximum support of his party as well as the opposition party, whose members he has also approached for votes.

“The party’s support is very important and I have it. The only time you have a stable assembly is when you allow the senate emerge by the popular choice. You must be the choice of the senators; just like David Mark.

“The people must believe in you as you have the ability to bring them together. I am very encouraged by the vibes that I am getting from the house. I have been able to make new friends from the senator-elects, they have told me that I provide that opportunity to make it to the leadership post.

“I have reached out to the PDP senators as well. The election is not for a means so you need the 109 senators and you must begin to develop relationships,” he stated.

On President Muhammadu Buhari’s asset declaration brouhaha, Saraki said: “most of these things are public already, when you send it to the CCB, the public has access to it”.

Only yesterday, Buhari listed five criteria required from the presidency and the APC to fill the vacant post and   Senator Lawan appeared as the most possible to emerge as the new senate president.
