Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state yesterday came to the rescue
of some grieving 20 graduate casual workers of the Institute of
Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu who have been receiving N10,000
monthly salary each since 2005.
They had broken down in tears as the governor paid an unscheduled
visit to the institution yesterday, telling the governor that since
they had remained under that condition in agony, the system had
continued to employ fresh graduates, leaving their (protesting
workers) request for upgrade unattended to .
The workers alleged that they had “been working as casual workers in
the school since 2005 as graduates on this small salary”
According to them, IMT had during the period under review continued to
employ workers and placed them on appropriate grade levels but would
consider them(complainants) for such employment, their cognate
experience notwithstanding. They called on the governor to come to
their rescue.
And in his characteristic manner, Governor Ugwuanyi who could not hide
his sympathy for them immediately directed that their names be
compiled for remediation .
He told the rector of the institution, Prof. M.U. Iloeje, to forward
the names to his office through his chief of staff.
The governor also affirmed the determination of his administration to
put smiles on the faces of the IMT community, and he drew loud
ovations from the students who praised him for taking the bold steps
to come and see things for himself in the institution.
The president student union of the school, Mr. Paul Nnaji used the
occasion of the governor’s visit to the school to enumerate some
challenges facing the school as, poor medical facilities, poor class
accommodation and hostel facilities among others.
He also appealed to the governor to reduce the student’s fees which he
said many families could no longer afford.
The governor, thereafter, visited Enugu South local government council
where workers of the council also complained of non-payment of their
salaries and leave allowances for over seven months now. They also
called on the governor to intervene on the matter. The governor
assured the workers that there problems would soon be rectified, and
directed the chairman of the council along with the chairman of the
National Union of Local Governments to come to his office to discus
plan for the resolution of the conflict..
