THE PUNCH reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in an interview with the CNN anchor, Christiane Amanpour, on Tuesday, July 21, said his administration will not spare any member of the All Progressives Congress as well as associates found culpable of corruption. The President, who is currently on a four-day visit to the United States President, Barack Obama, also reiterated his commitment to ending insurgency in the country, noting that the release of the Chibok girls was a paramount agenda of his government.

Buhari assured that if any of his associates or party member is indicted for corruption, they cannot escape justice, stating that there is not going to be any APC member or any close personality found guilty that would escape justice. He said the main objective of his government is to secure the release of the over 219 Chibok girls held captive by the Boko Haram terrorist group. He said he wants the girls to be released safe and sound, and encouraged to go back to their schools as well as rehabilitate them to go back to their normal lives.

The President hinted that if his government is convinced the girls would be delivered safe and sound, it will negotiate with the sect members. Buhari, who noted that he was not disappointed that President Obama did not choose to visit Nigeria, went ahead to reveal that he would send a formal invitation to the US President to visit Nigeria.

DAILY SUN reports that President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, July 21, revealed that his government would negotiate with Boko Haram terrorist group regarding the release of the abducted Chibok girls. The President said if he could confirm the credibility of the sect’s leader, he is willing to strike a deal. He explained that the major objective of his government is to ensure that the girls are brought back safely.

The President made this known while speaking in an interview with Christine Amampour of the Cable News Network (CNN). He also hinted that no corrupt person in the country will go scot-free, whether he or she belongs to his party or not. Buhari, who is on a four- day visit to the United States of America, said: “We have to be very careful about the credibility of various Boko Haram leadership coming out there claiming that they can deliver. We have to be very careful. We are taking our time because we want to bring them (Chibok girls) back safe to their parents and their school.”

When the President was asked whether the government is disposed to negotiating with the insurgents to secure the release of the Chibok girls, Buhari said: “Our main objective as a government is to bring back the girls and rehabilitate them to normal lives. If we are convinced that the leadership that presents itself that it can deliver those girls, we can then negotiate on what they want.” Recall that President Buhari had earlier noted that Nigeria would need assistance in the areas of training, equipment and intelligence gathering to be able to effectively tackle Boko Haram. Buhari, who admitted that there are security challenges in parts of Nigeria, especially in the South-South where militants sabotage oil installations and kidnap people for ransom, noted that nothing will work in Nigeria “until the country is secured.”

THE GUARDIAN also reported that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently in the US for four- days visit has revealed that his government is willing to dialogue with credible leaders of the insurgents and could trade-off prisoners for the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls “only after verifying the credibility of various Boko Haram leaderships claiming that they can deliver.”

Buhari made this known yesterday, July 21, in an interview with Christine Amanpour of the CNN, when asked whether, or not, he was worried about hundreds of Nigerians killed by Boko Haram in the last three months. The President when reminded by his interviewer, his campaign promises to outshine the previous administration on security and other socio-economic indices, Buhari stated that it is too early for anybody to pass judgment based on his campaign promises.

The President while citing kidnappings in the South-South and insurgency in the North-East, attributed the prevailing situation to military occupation of Nigeria, and declared that nothing would work until the country is secure. Recall that the Chibok girls were kidnapped in April 2014, a development that raised concerns that many of the girls might have been used for suicide missions and other purposes.

VANGUARD reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in a nine-minute CNN interview with Christine Amanpour on Tuesday, July 21, said no corrupt member of his party will escape justice.   Buhari, who was fielding questions from Amanpour when asked if he would sanction the guilty ones if they were members of his party or associates, he said: “I just have to. There is not going to be any party member or personality that can escape justice.”

The President during the session also restated his promise to secure the release of the Chibok girls held captive by the Boko Haram sect even if it means negotiating with leaders of the terrorists group. Buhari further stated that he would deliver on his campaign promises, pointing out that 12 weeks is too early to judge whether or not he has performed. While clearing the air that he is not angry that President Barack Obama did not include Nigeria on the list of Africa countries to visit later this week, Buhari said he would invite the United States President to Nigeria.

THE NATION reports that former president Goodluck Jonathan might have failed to protect some of his former aides and ministers from being probed. It was gathered that the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar Peace Committee has not been able to have a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari with whom Dr. Jonathan would like the committee to put in a word.

Jonathan had expected a peace session between him and Buhari at the instance of the Abdulsalami Committee, which played a major role in ensuring peace during the general elections. Gen. Abdulsalami was said to have tried couple of times to reach out to Buhari but state duties always pose an impediment to the meeting.

Jonathan, who arrived from the UK about a week ago, is said to be worried about the fate of his former national security adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) as well as the detention of his former chief security officer, Mr. Gordon Obuah. There were also fresh reports yesterday that Jonathan’s former Aide-de-Camp, and later chief personal security officer, Mr. Moses Jitoboh, was picked up by security agents, but The Nation could not confirm this. Although the alleged arrest of Jitoboh was linked to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, but a source in the anti-graft agency denied knowledge of it.

Meanwhile, many of Jonathan’s ministers have relocated abroad over fear of being probed. Sources close to Buhari hinted that the President has decided not to compromise his focus to “retrieve” ill-gotten wealth from some top officials in the immediate past government.
