What We’ll Do To Counter Boko Haram: New CDS Sets Strategic Direction

The newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has said he was ready to set a new timeline to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

According to him, a new strategic and operational direction in the prosecution of the fight against terror in the country would be provided, This Day reports.

He stated this when delivering an inaugural address at the handing and taking over ceremony between him and the outgone Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex  Badeh (rtd), at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 21.

The new CDS said: “A lot has been done in the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the North-east; in furtherance of the successes so far achieved, we will look at ways to strengthen the existing arrangement as well as provide new strategic direction.

“We will set specific timelines and milestones to be achieved; look at gaps in the ongoing efforts and do all that are needful, with the support of government, to address these gaps especially in the areas of actionable intelligence, logistics, communication and other critical equipment.

“We must explore every available means to obtain real-time and actionable intelligence in all our operations.”

Olonisakin added that he would improve on the collaboration with other security agencies, especially in the areas of intelligence gathering and also strengthen the newly established Military Command Control Centre with necessary personnel and equipment for greater coordination of the North-east operation, in line with presidential directives.

He also vowed to curb other criminal activities in the country such as oil theft and illegal oil bunkering in Nigerian waterways.

The new defence chief commended his predecessor, Badeh for the effort he put into improving the operational efficiency of the Nigerian Armed Forces, promising to integrate his monumental legacies.

On Monday, July 13, President Muhammadu Buhari fired all the security service chiefs and appointed their replacements.

The newly  appointed Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, had said during a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno that Boko Haram militants would either beg for peace or face the wrath of highly motivated and combat ready soldiers under his command.
