ABEOKUTA—A mild drama ensued
midnight Saturday at State Hospital,Ijaiye, Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a
patient went wild and beat up medical personnel and other patients.
Trouble started when the male patient (name withheld ), who was admitted in the Emergency Treatment Room,ETR, alongside other patients rose from his bed at 11:05pm and reportedly launched attacks on the people on sight and vandalised the ward.
Vanguard gathered that the attack launched by the patient, forced doctors, nurses and other medical personnel on duty to take cover, and bolted of from the ward.
The first victim of the attack by the wild patient was his mother, who he allegedly beat up black before attacking other patients .
Some patients who were able to escape the wrath of the violent patient, sneaked out of the ward after pulling out infusion needle from their vein, while those who could not lift themselves got beaten by the patient.
However, some of the patients and relatives who spoke with Vanguard on anonymity, said the patient was admitted following head injuries he sustained during a face off with some unidentified security men who arrested him at an odd hour.
“We were told that he had a face off with some security on the street and sustained injuries on the head, and was brought to hospital and subsequently admitted and given treatment. Just a few minutes after the doctors and nurses attended to him,and patients were asleep, he rose to launch attack on everything in sight. His mother was the first victim, who he beat mercilessly,’ a patient recalled
When Vanguard visited the hospital yesterday, traces of bloodstain, which were a fallout of the attacks littered the ground,as some of the patients and relatives were seen recounting their experiences.
Meanwhile, the Medical Director of the Hospital, Kayode Oladeinde, when contacted, declined comment on the ugly development, saying,”I am a civil servant and have no authority to speak to the press, except I am permitted, so I cannot say anything on it.”
