Following indications that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may take its probe to a new level, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Nigerian minister is reportedly on the run.
The Nation gathered that there are chances that the anti-graft agency may seek to know how much of the $2.1 billion arms purchase cash for which former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki is being probed, went into the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections respectively.
Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and ex-president Goodluck Jonathan exchange handshake after the former’s ministerial appointment.
The anti-corruption agency is also likely to ask what role the former minister play in the alleged diversion of the funds after it was reportedly gathered that the cash was wired into the account of the former gubernatorial aspirant in Lagos state.
A source told The Nation that the former minister, who has since gone into hiding, may relocate over fears that if he remains in the hideout, his extradition for trial would be easier.
“The huge funds were paid into the accounts of the ex-Minister for elections in the two states.
“There are allegations that the funds were not disbursed as expected because the candidates had their own campaign funds.
“Although some military and security personnel were to benefit from the slush funds, they were also shortchanged.
“But we have discovered that the ex-Minister has sneaked out of the country. As soon as we establish his whereabouts, we know what to do,” the source who pleaded anonymity, said.
This fresh revelation by the EFCC is a new twist to the prosecution of the former NSA who has been in the agency’s custody for some weeks now, alongside former governor of Sokoto state, Attahiru Bafarawa and Chief Alegho Dokpesi, who have also been fingered in the arms deal.
Over the weekend, it was also revealed that two Islamic organisations reportedly rejected former president Goodluck Jonathan’s $3million which they were approached with to drum support for his re-election bid.
