Onofiok Luke was on Monday, December 21, elected as the speaker of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly.
Luke, a member representing Nsit Ubium state constituency of the state was elected following the nullification of the election of the former speaker, Aniekan Uko (PDP- Ibesikpo/Asutan Constituency) by the Court of Appeal last week.
NAN reports that 24 members, out of 26 were present during the session on Monday.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after their sitting, the new speaker promised to work for the unity and progress of the state, saying his election was the will of God.
“We ascribe everything that happened today to God. Only God should take glory,” he said.
Also, the House leader, Aniefiok Dennis (PDP) representing Etinan constituency was replaced by Aniekan Bassey (PDP) representing Uruan constituency.

Dennis replacement followed the nullification of his election by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja.
The new speaker was said to have left guests who turned out to honour his election at the Light Power World ground, along Two-lane within the state capital, Uyo, on their feet for more than three hours as he continued to release unstoppable Christian songs.
Luke is a two-term state legislator and the immediate past chairman of the House Committee on Education. He served as personal assistant to Godswill Akpabio, the former Akwa Ibom governor, for three years.
He was said to have eyed the speakership position earlier but the political class reportedly ganged up to produce the former speaker who was a first timer in the assembly.
On Wednesday, October 21, an election tribunal nullified the elections that took place in 18 out of 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom state without unseating the governor.
However, the Appeal Court nullified the entire poll of the April 11 governorship election, thereby voiding the election of Udom Emmanuel as the governor of the state.
