INEC Set To Probe REC, Others Over Disputed Bayelsa Guber Election

Professor Yakubu Mohammad, the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched investigation into the roles of Bayelsa State Resident Commissioner (REC), Baritoh Kpagih and  others officials of the electoral body in  the crises that led to the inconclusive election in the state.

Leadership reported that INEC has begun probe of cases of compromise and alleged acceptance of bribe from some political parties to disrupt the smooth conduct of the election.

It was learnt that the move to probe the conduct of the December 5, gubernatorial election in Bayelsa state came as a result of the petition submitted by the APC before the Commission.

The All Progressives Congress is allegedly corruption and bias against some officials of the state office of INEC and the illegality of the cancellation of the election in the Sourthern Ijaw local government area of the state.

The APC governorship candidate in the state, Timipre Sylva had while reacting to the announcement by the INEC on the cancelled election in the Southern Ijaw local government area of the state alleged that the process leading to the cancellation of the election in Southern Ijaw was impaired with financial inducements and manipulations by the officials of INEC.

However, INEC is yet to fix a date for the supplementary election in the Southern Ijaw.

According to the INEC director, Voter Education and Publicity (VEP, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, the commission is still constituting over the impasses.

The Peoples Democratic Party had alleged that some politicians and groups planned to disrupt the existing peace witnessed in Bayelsa state.
