The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is said to have proposed January as the kick-off date for the 2016 Nigerian Premier League season, Africanfootball.com reports.
This is to enable clubs playing at the continental level prepare well ahead of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
“The league will not wait for 23 players (who will make the final squad for the CHAN) to start. We need to get going so that our clubs in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup will get some matches under their belt before their preliminary matches in February,” a top official disclosed.
There had been reports the new season will kick-start after the Africa Nations Championships to be hosted by Rwanda between January 16 and February 7.
The NFF is said to ratify the proposed January kick-off date at their Annual General Assembly on Wednesday December 16, 2015.
Meanwhile, there are strong indications that Nigeria National League (NNL) club-sides, Adamawa United and Kwara United have shown interest in buying-over Giwa FC’s slot at the Nigerian Premier League level.
