Eleven former presidents, heads of state, vice presidents and chiefs of the general staff are to share N2.3 billion in entitlements thanks to the 2016 federal budget.
The entitlements for former leaders were made public in President Muhammadu Buhari’s address to the National Assembly on the 2016 budget on Tuesday.
The former presidents and regional chiefs include General Yakubu Gowon, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, General Olusegun Obasanjo, and Goodluck Jonathan.
The former vice presidents and former chiefs of the general staff include Dr. Alex Ekwueme, General Oladipupo Diya, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku and Alhaji Namadi Sambo.
Each former president and former state head is entitled to receive N350,000 per month, while former vice presidents and former chiefs of general staff are entitled to receive N250,000 per month.
The move to grant the entitlements has been met with some controversy due to the past policies of the former leaders, some of whom are former military dictators.

Meanwhile, N115 billion was allocated to the National Assembly in the 2016 budget. This does not include the N60 billion allocated to constituency projects.
The federal government also plans to spend N20 billion on the Presidential Amnesty Programme which include stipends and allowances for 30,000 former militants from the Niger Delta worth N7.875 billion.
This includes operational costs of N1. 834 billion and reintegration programmes for former militants worth N10.291 billion.
Furthermore, the federal government has been allocated N200 billion for special capital projects, and N20 billion be granted to the infrastructural developments fund.
The budget also contained N5.5 billion to be paid to state governments for repairs of federal roads, while local contractors are to receive N5.5 billion.
